Exterior clearcoat for painted signs

On a recent overseas trip my wife & I purchased a decorative sign that appears to be painted over some sort of wood laminate or pressed board. She wants to hang the sign outside. What is the best way to protect it from the elements? Some sort of clear poly or would marine poly work best?

Thanks

Welcome to the forums!

Laminate or pressed wood isn't great for outside use A spar poly like Minwax's Helmsman may affect the look of the sign as it will give it an amber cast. Not all that noticeable with colors but very noticeable with white! An automotive clear coat might be an option.

IMO if the sign is expected to see much weather it would be best to talk her out of hanging it outside.

Welcome to the forums.

Spar urethane but it will likely darken the color a bit so you may want to test that on some scrap first.

Edit: Whoops, looks like Mark beat me to it.
