10 Epoxy Adhesive Safety Tips 10 Epoxy Adhesive Safety Tips

Epoxy adhesive is a type of high strength adhesive, which is used in many varied industries and applications. These adhesives are very long lasting, durable and resistant to heat, chemicals and adverse weather conditions. Epoxy adhesives are so strong that they are used in automobiles, planes, machines and other applications that require very high strength. When you use these adhesives, you must observe some safety precautions to prevent accidents, burns and other untoward incidents.

Prevent Inhalation

Inhalation of fumes from an epoxy adhesive can cause irritation in the bronchial passage. It can also cause problems in breathing, cough, headaches, nausea, dizziness and vomiting. To prevent inhalation and excessive buildup of fumes, work in a well ventilated room. If you feel unwell during application, move outdoors immediately and seek help.

Wear Protective Gloves

Gloves are important because they will prevent any of the adhesive from landing on your hands. Make sure you wear gloves made of a material that is resistant to the epoxy adhesive.

Wear Clothing that Covers Your Skin

Wear long sleeved clothing and cover your skin when working with epoxy adhesive. Contact with epoxy adhesive can cause burning, irritation, flaking and itchiness, so it is best to take precautionary steps beforehand.

Wear a Respiratory Mask and Goggles

A respiratory mask is useful in keeping the fumes away from your face. Safety goggles with side shields are also recommended, because the epoxy adhesive may react with certain materials. The reaction may result in splatters or toxic fumes.

Mix the Resin and Hardener Carefully

Most epoxy adhesives come in 2 parts, a resin and a hardener, that must be mixed before application. Mix small quantities at a time and apply those before mixing more. Be very cautious when you are mixing the 2 different parts.

Apply Adhesive with a Suitable Tool

Use a suitable tool or applicator for applying the adhesive. Never apply it with your hands, even if you have gloves on.

Keep Away from Eyes, Mouth and Skin

If any epoxy adhesive lands on your face, eyes or mouth, you must wash it immediately with warm water and soap. Get medical attention if the irritation is prolonged or if there is any pain.

In Case of Ingestion, Consult Doctor Immediately

If there is any accidental ingestion of epoxy adhesive, consult your doctor immediately. Never attempt to induce vomiting or take any medication yourself.

Keep out of the Reach of Children

Epoxy adhesive can be very dangerous if misuses, which is why it must stored in a safe place. Never allow children in the vicinity of the work area and do not let them play with the containers, even if they are empty.

Store in a Cool Dark Place

Epoxy adhesive must be kept away from sources of heat and open flames. Never store the container in an excessively hot place and never freeze it either. Store the container tightly shut, in a cool dark, well ventilated place.
