12 Infrared Sauna Safety Tips to Consider
An infrared sauna is an enclosure made of wood, wherein people are exposed to radiant heat from an infrared heat tube. The body starts to sweat in response to the heat and this helps in the elimination of toxins. Infrared saunas are different from regular saunas, because they directly transmit heat to the human body unlike regular saunas that rely on air or steam. When you use an infrared sauna, you must consider some important safety tips.
1 – Keep Young Children and Pets Away from the Sauna
An infrared sauna produces a lot of moisture and humidity. This may not be suitable for young children under the age of 6. Keep your pets away from the infrared sauna as well. In addition to being a safety risk, pet hair and danger can quickly contaminate the interior of the sauna.
2 – Never Use the Sauna under the Effect of Alcohol or Medication
If you are feeling drowsy, tired, sleepy or are under the effect of medication, you must never use the infrared sauna.
3 – Never Touch the Heater, Light or Electrical Components When You Are Using the Sauna
Never operate the electrical controls or touch the heater, light or fan inside the sauna when you are wet or bare footed. Only do so after turning off the sauna and waiting till all the components have cooled down and are dry.
4 – Leave the Sauna If You Feel Uncomfortable
If you feel nauseous, drowsy or sleepy, leave the sauna immediately. You could lose consciousness or fall asleep in the sauna.
5 – Let Someone Know that You Are in the Sauna
It is always a good idea to notify someone of your presence in the sauna. Avoid locking yourself in.
6 – Never Fall Asleep Inside the Sauna
It could be fatal to fall asleep inside a sauna. Though the interior is very relaxing, you must keep yourself alert and awake at all times.
7 – Consult a Doctor Beforehand if You have Health Problems
If you have weight problems, blood pressure, heart problems or other conditions that require medication, you must consult your doctor before using an infrared sauna.
8 – Avoid Using the Sauna if You are Pregnant
The high temperatures inside an infrared sauna can be dangerous to the growing fetus in a pregnant woman. Never use the infrared sauna if you are or could be pregnant.
9 – Never Store Articles or Clothing in the Sauna
Storing or drying clothing or other articles inside an infrared sauna is dangerous, because it increases the risk of fire. Never keep combustible materials anywhere close to an infrared sauna.
10 – Use a GFCI (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter)
To reduce the risk of electric problems, use a GFCI device for your infrared sauna, especially if you use it outdoors.
11 – Install Outdoor Sauna away from Power Lines
If you place the infrared sauna outdoors, you must plan the location properly. Install it in a private spot, away from power lines.
12 – Keep Water Away from the Infrared Tube
Never let the heater or infrared tube get wet under any circumstance. This could lead to malfunction or electrical shock.
