2 Easy Shelf Making Tips

Adding a shelf or two in a room or storage area makes good usage of wasted wall space. Shelves can be easy to make and hang and don't require a lot of do-it-yourself talent.

Tools and Materials Needed:

  • Boards of desired width
  • Saw
  • Tape measure
  • Wood glue
  • Wood trim
  • Metal brackets
  • Metal hanging strips

Step 1 - Measure Properly

Be sure that the shelves you are cutting are the proper length for the area where they will be installed. Measure the area. Also decide how much distance you will want between each shelf so you can determine how many shelves will fit into that area.

Step 2 - Secure Hanging Strips

The easiest shelf system is done with strips screwed into walls that adjustable metal brackets fit into and lock. Screw these into the wall, anchoring them securely into the wall studs. Then lock the brackets that hold the shelf into place. The beauty of this system is you can have varying distance between the shelves for different height items.

Step 3 - Decoration

If a plain wooden shelf isn't what you want, cut wood trim in the length of the shelf and secure into place using wood glue. Wood trim comes in various widths and designs to fit any decor and budget.
