2 Types of Stock Tanks Explained
There are many different types of stock tanks and they can be used for several different things. If you are looking to learn more, here is a little information to help you.
A stock tank is used for animal livestock to feed them and as watering troughs. They can be used in smaller individual stalls or in a general area for the animals to share.
Size and Material
The two different types of stock tanks are metal and plastic. Both types come in many different sizes from 5 gallon up to 300 gallons or more. The plastic stock tanks are generally used more for watering whereas the metal are used more for food because of rust. Both materials are extremely durable and can last for years. Metal stock tanks will outlive the plastic because it metal more stable in the long term. However, metal may be prone to rust depending on what you decide to use it for.
The plastic stock tank can have a matching lid, allowing it to also be used to store food for the animals in a manner that is very convenient for when they are ready to eat. Metal tanks do not come with lids and are harder to fit one to.
You can find stock tanks in two shapes. There are tanks available in a circle shape, which is better for one animal, or a long oval shape, which can be great for feeding several animals at a time.
Easy to Move
Because of their material and size variations you can typically move the stock tanks around pretty easily if you need them in the stalls for part of the day and then outside for the rest. Plastic tanks are light weight and the metal ones aren't heavy at all. Even the 300 gallon tanks can be moved by one person when they are empty.
Easy to Maintain
One of the greatest things about stock tanks is that they are easy to maintain. You can simply wash them out with a hose to clean them and they drain from the bottom so you can clean out the old water. The drain is a lot like one that you would see on a cooler so when you are ready to let the water out all you need to do is press the button and then it will begin to pour out. When you get to the very bottom all you need to do is tip it in the right direction Because of this easy draining system you do not have to worry about spills or heavy lifting trying to dump the whole thing out.
Both plastic and metal stock tanks are pretty inexpensive, especially considering everything that they can do. However, a metal one will be a little bit more expensive than a plastic one, so if you are on a budget and looking for a stock tank just for general use then you can choose whichever is cheaper.
Both plastic and metal stock tanks are easy to maintain and come in different sizes. The main difference is your preference in material as well as cost. No matter the job though, either one of them will do.
