2 Ways to Preserve Framed Antique Maps

Framed antique maps are a great way of decorating your home, but they also require a lot of care and attention. One of the best ways to make sure that your antique maps are durable is to preserve them using simple methods. Careful framing can be an important way to maintain the maps, but you also need to practice careful handling.

Framing the Antique Maps

Choose an acid-free frame for your antique maps, and then secure your ancient maps to a backer board. Glue all the way around the frames using an acid and gluten-free adhesive, and leave to dry. You need to do this in order to seal the frame. Take your backer board with the map, and place this into the frame. Seal around the outside of the backer board using tape, or a wood-putty caulk.

Regular Maintenance

Place your framed antique maps into a corner which is free of direct light. You may choose to use filters on nearby lights to preserve the map, or you could add a filter to the frame itself. You should then regularly inspect your frame for signs of vermin and mold, and look for signs of foxing on the antique map itself. Keep the air at a regular temperature to discourage parasites.
