3 Eco-Friendly Cleaners for Your Stainless Steel Sink

1. Homemade Stainless Steel Cleaners

There are many things that can be used to clean stainless steel appliances and items throughout your home. Some of them are for general use and others can be used for more specific uses.

Baking soda is a very common and versatile eco-friendly cleaner. Baking soda and water make a very good green cleaner for stainless steel sinks, countertops and cookware. To clean with baking soda you will sprinkle a small amount on the surface and using a damp cloth, gently scrub the area. Once the area is clean you will need to rinse the cloth or use a clean damp cloth to rinse the area.

If the area to be cleaned is difficult with a stain or dried on matter, you can make a paste with baking soda and water, spread it over the problem area, and let it sit for approximately 10 minutes then scrub it clean. If you would like to make the paste anti-bacterial you can add a drop of an essential oil–lavender or tea tree oil is a good choice for this.

A few other green stainless steel cleaners that can be used are a clean cloth that has been dampened with undiluted white vinegar or a clean cloth that has been dampened with club soda. Wipe the stainless steel with the cloth, then wipe dry with another clean cloth.

2. Homemade Cleaner for a Stainless Steel Sink

A mixture of four tbsp. baking soda and one quart of water is one of the better green cleaners for a stainless steel sink. Wet a clean cloth with the mixture, wring it out until damp and wipe out the sink. When the sink is clean, wipe it out again with a clean dry cloth.

3. Store Bought Eco-Friendly Stainless Steel Cleaners

There are some cleaners that can be bought in the store that are suitable for cleaning stainless steel. Some of these cleaners include Barkeeper’s Friend, Bon Ami powder, Kopper Kleen Seventh Generation, Earth Friendly and BioShield. All of these commercial products will do the same as homemade cleaners and are a good alternate solution for anyone who does not want to make their own cleaners or does not have the time to do so.
