3 Mistakes to Avoid When Building a Ground Level Deck 3 Mistakes to Avoid When Building a Ground Level Deck
If you are building a ground level deck on your own, follow the few tips below to avoid some of the most common headaches associated with this type of project.
1 - Pooling Water
To avoid pooling and stagnant water that might build up under your deck and cause mold or bad smells, simply choose an area for your deck that will allow water to drain off. You can create a slope on this area when you prepare the soil for your deck.
2 – Deck Wood
Unless you plan to use a wood sealer on your deck wood, don't use softer woods for your deck surface or support. Softer woods, like pine and fir, will weather faster and eventually crack, causing slivers.
3 – Plank Spacing
Avoid butting your floor boards against each other. In wet weather conditions, they will likely swell and create an uneven deck surface.
