3 Original Deck Lighting Ideas 3 Original Deck Lighting Ideas

The process of choosing appropriate deck lighting for your outdoor space can be a bit overwhelming. With so many different colors, styles, and price ranges, you may have no idea where to start. You have to stick within your budget, but at the same time you want to find something that will add to the overall feel of the space. With this in mind, you will most likely need to consider several different options before you find the style that you like. Just randomly choosing the first light that you come across is a recipe for being greatly disappointed. Therefore, you will have to put some time into choosing just the right lighting method for your deck. Here are a few deck lighting ideas for you to consider.

1. Recessed Lighting

One of the most interesting things to do with a deck space is to install recessed lighting in just the right places. Recessed lighting is a type of light that installs within the actual deck itself. The top of the light is flush with the surface of the floor and is safe to step on. These lights are very durable and present you with a number of design options.

With recessed lighting, it is often a good idea to outline a particular area of the deck. You could put recessed lighting on both sides of the stairs leading up to the deck or along a walkway. Many people have also successfully used them to go around the outside edge of the deck as well. Another great use of recessed lighting is when you outline a prominent feature of the deck such as a barbecue area or fire pit. Be creative with recessed lighting and you will find that you really tend to like the outcome.

2. Post Lighting

Another great idea for deck lighting on your outdoor space is to strategically use post lighting. Post lighting is a type of deck lighting that is attached to the top of a post or pole. This is a great way to provide ample light to the entire surrounding area. Where other types of deck lights are meant only to provide a little atmosphere, post lighting can light up an entire area. Many people use these to light up an entrance to the deck or to outline a walkway. You could even put them on every post of the deck if you want a very well-lit area for your deck. The more posts that you have on your particular deck, the more opportunities you have to use this type of lighting.

3. Accent Lighting

Accent lighting is another popular option that can really add a little flavor to your deck. With accent lighting, you are actually installing a small light on the side of the wall or railing. This shoots a little bit of light down onto the deck and helps you see where you are walking. These are often used in the same areas that recessed lighting is used to light walkways or stairs.
