The task of cleaning hardwood floors after sanding can be a time consuming one, so it's important to choose a product to do this that can quickly and effectively remove all the dust and other dirt but also for its ease of use and application. Here are a few tips that can help make the process go by smoothly.
Tip 1 - Use a Vacuum
The first thing that you will want to do is use a vacuum cleaner to get rid of any dust that you can. Begin by sweeping as much as you can into a pile and then vacuum up that portion.
Tip 2 - Use a Damp Rag
The best way to get the leftover dust off is to use a damp rag or a swifter. All you need to do is wipe in one direction and then use the rag to lift the dust off of the hardwood floors. It helps to have a garbage or laundry basket nearby for disposal.
Tip 3 - Use a Wood Cleaner
The acidic properties of vinegar that make it harmful for wood floor coatings would be beneficial at this point to clean the bare wood. If you choose a commercial wood floor cleaner you should check first to make sure it doesn't contain any oil or polish that would alter the adhesion of any topcoat that will follow for refinishing. Choose instead a cleaner that is specifically formulated for floors and have ingredients to dissolve dirt and grime along with picking up the dust. Whatever product is chosen, start cleaning with a mop in the direction of the wood planks. You can finish the job with a deeper cleaning, going with the grain and across the planks to nab dirt trapped in the crevices.
Following these 3 tips will ensure that you remove all of the dust from the area and that your hardwood floors will look and remain great.
