Safety is always in numbers, it is a good idea for you to have a friend or to along to help you with this task. Doing this task yourself is something that you can do but it will be much harder in the end.
Prepare
It is always best to be fully prepared for the job, in order to do this; you will need to make sure that you have the garage door opener disconnected. Make sure that you have the door locked in the down position. You will also need to get the garage door opener disconnected from the radial arm that is on your garage door.
Springs
If you have a 2 car garage, then you will have 2 springs. However, if you have a 1 car garage, then there is only 1 spring that you are going to have to worry about. In order to release the tension, you are going to have to unwind your spring. If the only spring that you have is one that is broken, then this is something that you will not have to worry about doing. Whenever you are working on the springs, you are going to need to make sure that the winding bar is placed directly into the slot and is pressed up going towards your ceiling. Your winding cone will be facing away from the door. Make sure that you do this slowly. There is no need to be in a rush whenever you are releasing the pressure. If you lose grip on it, it could swing around and hurt you.
Reinstallation
This is a task that you cannot rush through. It will take some time and some patience to be able to do it. Whenever you are getting the torsion springs put back up for the garage door opener, you will make sure that you take your time. Because you are adding pressure, it is something that is going to need to happen gradually. Taking your time is the best way to do this safely.
