Sliding room dividers are useful when you have a multipurpose space. The dividers are elegant, and provide a solution when you want to add privacy to a certain area in a room, to divide a room with 2 different destinations or just to separate larger areas. According to the space available, your room dividers can be in different sizes and forms. However, it is important that they match the decoration style in your home because, besides functionality, they also have an aesthetic role. These dividers are easy to build on your own. All you need is tools, a sliding door track and rollers.
1. Wood Sliding Room Dividers
Sliding room dividers made of wood should be your choice if you want a rustic atmosphere in your house. Wooden panels are more expensive, but they are durable and create a cozy atmosphere. Wooden room dividers can replace walls, and they also help attenuate noise, offering privacy. However, given their size and massive appearance, they are only recommended in large spaces. Moreover, they are heavy and need reliable installation to prevent accidents.
Determine how many panels you need. If you have a larger space, you should install more than 2 panels. Make sure you choose a sliding track that is strong enough to support the wood panels. The sliding track can be single, dual or triple.
Sliding tracks usually fit to any type of flooring, but you should check this with the manufacturer before you purchase it. In some cases, sliding tracks might require silicone coating beneath the rails for increased sturdiness.
Make sure the track has a locking system, which prevents wood panels from getting off the track. Install panel stops as well.
2. Plastic Sliding Room Dividers
Plastic sliding room dividers are an inexpensive option. The panels can be made of different types of plastic: PVC, acrylic or plexiglass. Another important advantage is that plastic screens come in different colors and different degrees of transparency.
If the panels are transparent enough, you can also create a light system to increase the aesthetic impact of the room dividers. Plastic is also a light material, so sliding will not be a problem.
You can use metal or wood sliding tracks.
3. Glass Sliding Room Dividers
Glass screens can be made of colored glass or opaque glass. You can position light sources on the sides of the dividers to create a more attention-grabbing effect.
Make sure the glass you purchase is resistant enough and light enough to slide without much effort. Use laminated safety glass which is at least 4 mm thick. Use aluminum frames. They are resistant and light.
Glass screens are also soundproof.
Combine materials and mix glass panels and mirror panels. Use tracks made of metal or wood
4. Paper or Fabric Sliding Room Dividers
Paper, fabric and canvas make great room dividers, especially if you have a small place you need to break up. You can buy colored material or you can choose to paint it yourself. Paper and fabric panels can give an oriental appearance to your room, just paint them with specific motifs.
Use rice paper and lumber frames for the panels. Glue the paper or the fabric to the frame. Use an electric blow drier to dry the material in the areas that you have used glue. Make sure the material is stretched when fixing it to the frames. Use light wooden frames. Choose appropriate sliding tracks. Mount the panels carefully, to avoid damaging the paper or the fabric. These materials need frames; find an interesting geometric pattern to build the frames: you could have a panel made of 2 or more squares or triangles.
Artists’ canvases can also be used as panels.
