6 Steps to Plan an Outdoor Patio 6 Steps to Plan an Outdoor Patio
When you start to build an outdoor patio it should start by making a list of certain step, or plans to follow. Many do it yourselfers make the mistake of jumping right into their outdoor patio project without thinking about specific steps or plans that will help them build their patio. These plans are necessary to help you make sure you have all the materials you need, know the dimensions of your patio, and even know what it will look like when finished. Here are a few steps that you should take to plan out your outdoor patio.
Measure, Measure, Measure
Many problems can be alleviated if you take the time to measure the area where the patio will be installed. These measurements are vitally important to make sure that you will have enough material for the patio. You do not want to run out of pavers, sand, or other pieces of material with only a few feet left. Measure twice the dimensions of your area and write them down on a piece of paper that you take with you to pick up the materials.
Plan the Shape of Patio
The great thing about a patio is that you are not limited to a certain shape. You do not have to have a square, rectangle, or triangle shaped patio. Use your imagination and draw it out on the ground with some landscape paint. This will give you a great look at what the patio will look like when it is finished. Use a piece of graph paper and draw a scale drawing of it.
What Type of Pavers Will You Use?
Another important step for your plans is the actual type of pavers that you will be using for the patio. There are plenty of different options that you can choose from. There are flagstone pavers, cement pavers, crushed rock, cap stones, and even tile. Of course, you could also use wood timbers for a rustic looking patio. Look over different options and choose which one you would like to use.
Plan for Power
If you want to do any type of entertaining on your outdoor patio you should also plan for any type of electrical components that will be needed. You will need to run conduit, and wires, to the patio and set up electrical boxes. Using your drawing of the patio you can plan for where the electrical boxes will go.
Plan for Access to Patio
A patio can be built anywhere on your property. You can choose to locate the patio in the middle of your flower garden, around a pool, or alongside a home like a deck. Wherever you place the outdoor patio you will need to plan for where the access points will be. You can choose to have a completely open patio, but if it is going to be covered, or located along flower beds, you want to know where the foot traffic will go.
Plan the Time to Build
Since the outdoor patio is outside you will want to choose a time frame where it will be workable weather. Besides the weather you want to line up some help with friends and making sure the materials are delivered on time.
