Installing skylights can be done by any do-it-yourselfer with the right tools and instructions. You'll need to install flashing around the hole before the skylight is installed. Many companies now manufacture a self-flashing skylight that makes this much easier. To get you started with your project, here are the six basic tools you will need.
1. Tape Measure and Chalk Line
Finding the right location, and then making straight cuts is a must. These two items are inseparable for doing the job right.
2. Circular Saw
To be used as the main cutting tool or to just get through the first layer of sheathing, the circular saw should be used when installing the skylight.
3. Reciprocating Saw
This heavy-duty alternative to the circular saw is invaluable when cutting through joists and beams.
It is important to secure the skylight with heavy-duty screws. The drill will help you drive them home.
5. Caulking Gun
A watertight seal is necessary. Using the caulking gun to apply a bead of silicone, or another weathertight sealant is a must.
You will need to do some framing work when installing skylights. The hammer will help you to position the headers and secure them with nails.
