A General Guide to Pouring a Self Leveling Concrete Floor
The need of leveling a concrete floor occurs more frequently than one can imagine. This is simply because there a number of factors that contribute to uneven wear and tear, e.g. heavy traffic in one area. Weather also plays its part in developing cracks in the surface of the floor, thereby making the process of leveling concrete flooring a necessary exercise.
Basically, concrete is a building material that is comprised of Portland cement, water and gravel, and is mostly used on structural components, floors and walls. Despite the fact that the composition of concrete is a resilient and durable one, it does have its limits; thus, the need to level concrete floors arises. Another major reason is that someone did not have proper knowledge of when laying the concrete, resulting in an uneven surface.

This is because self-leveling concrete (a.k.a. self-leveling overlay) can simply be poured over a surface that is uneven, which makes the floor become completely smooth and looking like new. It does this with a concrete and polymer mix that results in a pourable mixture that spreads.
The benefits of combining a polymer with the concrete might appear to be a new idea, but the same has been in use since the 1940s, when it was developed as a protective coat on ships against extreme weather conditions. Scientifically speaking, polymers are simple organic molecules (also known as monomers) that have a more complex structure when added to water. This process of monomers converting into polymers is called polymerization; it is a huge plus for leveling concrete floors.
Adding polymers to the concrete mixture does a whole lot of good to floors. The first advantage is that it brings an increased bond strength when poured over a concrete floor, which results in better resilience to traffic and weather conditions and less frequent requirements for repeat leveling. There is also a thawing resistance in this mixture, which helps in colder areas, where the weather conditions are majorly responsible for damaging the floors. The mix also has lower permeability, higher abrasion resistance and better flexural strength to bring a much higher level of durability to the floor.
The consistency of this polymer mix is thinner and smoother than a standard concrete mixture. The standard measure of both the components is a very simple one, and only requires a turbine mixing bit to do the job. This bit is a power drill accessory. This thinner consistency allows it to spread itself over the entire floor automatically without much effort.
Due to the smoothness of this polymerized mix, there are a whole lot of stylish modifications you can do to your floor to get stunning visual appearances. For instance, strips of steel and wood can be put on the uneven floor, followed by the mix to create patterns in the floor.
