Adding a Footrest To Your Hammock Swing
A hammock swing can provide you with utmost comfort. You can rig up a hammock chair or swing by adding a footrest to it. Installing a hammock footrest can be easy, so you really do not have to break a sweat. The only thing that you may have to worry about is whether to use canvas or ropes and wood.
Tools and Materials that You Will Need:
- Piece of canvas sheet, about 30 inches wide, or
- Polished plank of two-by-four wood, about 30 inches wide
- S-hooks, 4 pieces
- Pair of nylon ropes
- Metal eyelets for the canvas, 6 pieces
- Hobby or Exacto knife
- Tape measure
- Sewing machine
Step 1 – Install the Hammock Swing or Chair in Place
Before you can install the footrest, you must first set up the hammock in place. This will enable you to correctly measure the right length of the canvas or rope to be used. For a canvas footrest, you can set up the hammock facing your porch railing or any raised platform where you will attach the support harnesses for the footrest.
Step 2 – Measure the Length of Canvas or Rope
The size of canvas or rope that you will add will make or break the level of comfort of the hammock. Typically, for both the canvas and the rope, you only have to worry about their lengths, their width should be about 30 inches or you can do whatever width will be comfortable for you.
Step 3 – Cut the Canvas or Rope to Size
After measuring the canvas or rope, the next step is to cut them accordingly. For the canvas, add about half an inch allowance on the edges. Fold the one-half inch allowance and then sew the edges using a sewing machine. Put holes on each corner of the canvas sheet and secure the holes with metal eyelets.
Step 4 – Make a Pair of Holes on the Front Edge of the Hammock Seat
If your hammock chair or swing does not have holes on the edges where you can attach the S-hooks, you need to cut the holes yourself. Simply use a hobby or Exacto knife to cut two holes on the corners of the front edge of the hammock. Sew the edges of the holes or clamp the hole with a metal ring or eyelet.
Step 5 – Attach the Canvas
If you choose to install a canvas footrest, all you need to do is attach one end of the sheet onto the front edge of the hammock seat with a pair of S-hooks. For the other end of the canvas sheet, prepare two harnesses on your porch railing or any other raised platform. Make sure that the harnesses also have holes where you can attach the tail end of the canvas using a pair of S-hooks.
Step 6 – Attach the Ropes and Wooden Footrest
If you choose to use the ropes and the wood plank for your footrest, bore a hole on one end of the plank, then insert one end of a rope into the hole. Repeat the process on the other end of the wood plank. Make a large knot on the inserted ends of the ropes to secure the plank of wood in place.
Lastly, attach one S-hook on each of the opposite ends of the rope. The S-hooks will then be attached to the hammock swing chain or onto the holes you made on the hammock seat edges.
