Step 1 – Gain Access
The first step is to gain access to the drive belt tensioner, which you may find will require the vehicle’s manual. With some cars, it will be necessary to raise the car with a jack to gain access from below. Brackets that protect the bolts can be removed.
Step 2 – Make Adjustments
Adjustments to a drive belt tensioner can usually be undertaken by way of adjuster bolts. The bolts can be turned to tighten or loosen the tension of the belt, with the clockwise direction loosening the bolt. With a wrench, turn the bolt in accordance with the adjustment necessary.
Step 3 – Test
Test the adjustment that has been made to drive belt tensioner by manually turning it. Using a finger and thumb, pull the belt around and check whether it offers any resistance. Where it does, the adjustment will be correct.
