Advantages of Using a Handsaw vs. a Power Saw

A handsaw is an essential tool in the arsenal of many do-it-yourselfers. It can be used for a variety of different projects and many people prefer it to a power saw. Here are a few things to consider about using a handsaw instead of a power saw.

One of the big advantages of using a handsaw is that it is completely portable and easy to take with you wherever you go. With a power saw, they can be big and bulky and difficult to take with you when you need to go somewhere and do a job. For example, if you have limited space for your tools, a handsaw can fit easily in a small space where as a power saw will require much more space.

Power Concerns

Using a handsaw will allow you to do a job anywhere and anytime. You do not have to be concerned about power sources or batteries. With a power saw, you will either have to be near a plug-in or have a battery in order to work. This can greatly limit the places that you can work and your work schedule will depend upon the battery being charged. If you think that your battery is charged and it really is not, it can really put a damper on your plans to work for the day. You might have to wait for the battery to charge which could take several hours before being able to do a job.

Another big advantage of using a handsaw is that it is much safer than a power saw. There have been many fewer accidents when using a handsaw as opposed to power saws. A power saw is very powerful and moves at a very high rate of speed. Therefore, it is very easy to cut your finger or hand or some other part of your body while using them. They can cut right through your flesh before you even know what is going on. With a handsaw, you are the one applying the power. Therefore, if the saw slips, you can decide to stop moving it and only minor injuries may occur. This makes a handsaw a much safer tool to use overall.

Detailed Control

When trying to make a very detailed cut that needs to be exact, a handsaw can provide you with more control than a power saw could. You can take your time with a handsaw and be very slow and deliberate. A power saw can be difficult to control sometimes and increases the likelihood that you will make a mis-cut.

Although there are several advantages of using handsaws, there are a few disadvantages as well. For one thing, they require a lot more physical labor and hard work. Secondly, you will most likely be able to get through a job much faster by using a power saw. Therefore, power saws can save you a lot of time and energy as opposed to using a handsaw.
