Alcove Construction: 3 Building Tips Alcove Construction: 3 Building Tips
An alcove can provide an attractive recessed area that is excellent for displaying almost anything you can imagine and it makes a great long afternoon DIY project. If you're considering adding an alcove to your home, here are some tips to get you started:
Tip #1 - Measure, Measure, Measure!
If you want your alcove project to go smoothly, and look like it was professionally done, then making sure you get accurate measurements is essential. Be sure to measure the width and height of the wall opening (where the recessed alcove will be placed) two, or even three, times. The same applies for measurements for your lumber. Remember the old saying ‘measure twice – cut once’.
Tip #2 - Draw a Picture
By drawing a box on the wall, which uses the measurements of the outside dimensions of the alcove, you will be able to better visualize the way your alcove will look in your room. Be sure to use a level or straight-edge to draw your straight lines – it will also making cutting the drywall a lot easier.
Tip #3 - Use a Stud Finder
Before you start sawing, or knocking holes in the wall, use a stud finder to locate studs in the area where you wish to place your alcove. Then, try to center your alcove on the inside edges of two studs; this will help you create a stronger wall area for your alcove.
