Aluminum Roof Repair: Patching Holes Properly

An aluminum roof is one of the best roofing options for your shed or workshop. Known for its durability and robustness, this type of roof can withstand all kinds of weather to provide protection. However, exposure to weather elements for years on end can result in these roofs getting damaged. The most common issue when it comes to aluminum roofs is that they can develop holes, which can be a huge problem during rain. Fortunately, you can fix these holes with these simple steps.

Step 1 - Prepare the Roof

When patching holes on an aluminum roof, you may have to climb onto the roof. Make sure that you have safety gloves and footwear. You should also be careful of your footing when stepping onto the roof. Locate the hole in the aluminum roof and brush the area around the hole with the wire brush to take away dirt, debris, and other things. It is important that there is nothing on the roof that will interfere with the patching.

Step 2 - Cut the Mesh

Once the area around the hole is cleaned, cut two patches of the roofing mesh with a pair of metal shears. It is important to measure the mesh properly before cutting it as you would not want a small patch. The patch should be at least two inches bigger than the size of the hole so that it rests properly.

Step 3 - Fix the Hole

After the two patches are ready, you can start fixing the hole in the roof. Mix the roof cement and spread it around the damaged area with a knife. When the mixture is leveled around the area, place the patch on it. You will then have to cover the mesh patch with more cement. Make sure you work the cement well through the mesh patch so that it joins with the coat underneath. Another layer of this patch will be required for a complete effect. Repeat the process of placing the mesh patch over the previous coat of cement. Apply another coat of roof cement on the mesh and remember to work it through the mesh so that it joins the layer below.

This process can be used wherever there are holes in your aluminum roof. This solution is not permanent but can last a while. Usually, metal roof repair is done by soldering the same piece of metal to the roof in order to cover holes, but aluminum can’t be soldered. This is why patching them in this manner is the best option. You can also use a fiberglass patch to cover up a hole on an aluminum roof.
