Aluminum Threshold Installation Aluminum Threshold Installation

What You'll Need
Measuring tape
New aluminum threshold
Drilling machine
Hacksaw
Broom
Screws
Vacuum cleaner

Any doorway looks great with an aluminum threshold. It prevents air from entering the interior as it seals of the joints. Replace the existing aluminum threshold if you see effects of wear and tear like dents or chipped portions, or install a new one to weatherize the exterior of any doorway. Follow the installation steps below to do this project yourself and save money.

Step 1 – Measuring the Area

Use a tape to get the exact measurement of the threshold. Mark down the accurate measurements to take with you to the hardware store.

Step 2 – Buying the Aluminum Threshold

Buy the aluminum threshold based on the measurements that you have taken in Step 1. Make sure the threshold is exact according to the measurements you have taken.

Step 3 – Remove the Old Threshold

If there is already a threshold, then you will have to take it off. This will probably involve unscrewing a few screws.

Step 4 – Wedged Threshold

If the existing threshold is wedged into the area, then you will have to cut it after you remove the screws. Make sure not to cause damage to the doorjamb.

Step 5 – Cut Notches

The next step is to cut notches in the aluminum threshold to help the piece fit on the existing door stops. To cut notches, use a hacksaw blade with fine teeth.

Step 6 – Clean the Threshold

Clean the installation area and the doorway. Make sure all dust and debris are removed from the threshold spot.

Step 7 – Remove the Seal

Remove the existing seal between the threshold and the floor. This will improve the function of the new layer of sealant.

Step 8 – Apply Caulk

Apply a thick layer of caulk on the area between the floor and the threshold.

Step 9 – Drill Holes

Drill holes in the aluminum threshold at the places where the floor screws will enter.

Step 10 – Clean the Area

After drilling, make sure to clean the area of any debris. You can use the vacuum cleaner to clear the area of all fine dust.

Step 11 – Place the Aluminum Threshold

Place the aluminum threshold in the slot and screw into the floor's jamb. Check if the threshold is placed properly and all the screws are secured firmly.
