In the world of silicon and solar energy, the use of amorphous solar cell has become one of the most popular choices in thin film transistors. It can be used in a variety of electronics because of its ability to be spread so thinly and at such a low temperature. Although it is the preferred solar cell over others, there is also the dye sensitized solar cell. Here are some of the differences in the use of these two cells.

The Use of a-SI in Solar Cells

Amorphous silicon, or a-SI, has for years been used in calculators. Recently, however, they have been found to be very useful in large area solar cells. Because of their thin size they can be stacked several high, reaching higher efficiencies. Each one working well at a specific light frequency. The best advantage of the a-Si is the cost advantage and not the function. It takes less silicon to make up this cell than the same cell made of carbon silicon. However, the cost of the manufacturing makes this only the solar cell of choice where the thinness is the product that can be used.

The Dye Sensitized Solar Cell

The dye sensitized solar cell or DSSC is a new type of low cost solar cell. It is like the a-Si, a thin film solar cell.It is actually based on a semi conductor.  Because of the low cost of the material to produce these thin layer cells, the future for them is looking very good. Unlike the old type solar cell, it is not limited to the types of materials. This is an photoelectrochemical system rather than an atomic based silicon one. this in itself makes it a very affordable material to produce. Not only is it low cost but does not require elaborate equipment to duplicate it. It is very flexible and can be produced int thin sheets that doesn't need protective layering to cover it from en climate weather conditions or falling tree branches.

Amorphous vs Dye Sensitized

If we are going to pick a winner in this face off it will have to be in the future. As of now , there is no high production of the dssc although the predictions are that it is going to be the one to take over fossil fuel generated power by the year 2020 by the European Union. the a-Si has been around for a while. However, it is only used in small solar cells and not large ones as the DSSC can be. So for now the solar industry will have to utilize what they can as cheaply as possible until this technology comes more into being.
