Are cobblestone or concrete walkways more durable?
While cobblestone is very strong, especially when mortared into place, concrete walkways are more durable. Concrete is one of the strongest building materials available. Concrete can withstand extreme temperatures over a long period of time. This makes it ideal in snowy climates. The bond forged by the materials in concrete mix is strong enough to last decades.
Cobblestones are durable and can withstand a lot of wear and tear. The problem is the bonding. Mortared cobblestone walkways are secured into place, but the mortar only fills the cracks between the stones and can breakdown over time. Cobblestones packed without mortar also make good walkways, but they can easily be upset by cold weather, ground movement, flooding or constant treading upon them.
