Are Dryer Vent Kits Worth Buying? Are Dryer Vent Kits Worth Buying?
Dryer vents are one of the most important vents in your home. Dryer vent kits are worth buying and can save you time and money if you find the right kit.
Things to Look for in a Good Dryer Vent
Look for smooth metal vent kits. Do not use plastic vents. Plastic may be easier to fit and install, but it's more likely to melt. Plastic is difficult to insulate, which is an important consideration if the vent passes through your ceiling or through a cold space in your home. Hot dryer air will cause water vapors on the vent to condense, causing problems with mold or potentially leaks into your drywall or crawl space.
There are very few dryers that can be vented directly, or in a straight line to the outside. Make sure your vent comes with at least one, but preferably two 90-degree corner fittings.
Your dryer vent pipe should be at least 4 inches in diameter to provide adequate venting. Spiral vents should not be stretched to their maximum length. Make sure you buy more pipe than you need to ensure you have enough for corners too.
