Are there any disadvantages to staining wooden stairs?

There are several ways you can finish wooden stairs in a home. They can be stained, painted, tiled or carpeted, all depending on the decorating effect you wish to achieve or even the amount of noise you are willing to tolerate if stairs aren't carpeted. Staining stairs is popular but it has some drawbacks. After applying stain to wood stairs, you should also apply varnish to protect the stain from wear. Heavily trafficked areas will wear down and lighten over a period of time without the varnish. Stained stairs are difficult to clean unless they have also been varnished as the stain doesn't completely seal the wood, so dirt and stains can penetrate the wood.
