How to Install an Attic Fan How to Install an Attic Fan
There are many different reasons for putting an attic fan in you home. The most popular reason is to save on your energy bill. Whatever your reason may be, it is a good decision to add this feature to your home. When thinking about a project this size, most people get intimidated. With this guide, you will not be. Here are a few steps to make this an easier project.
Step 1 - Choose the Right Attic Fan
The first step in this project is to choose the right size of fan. This will depend on the square footage of your house. You can get help with matching a fan to your house from almost any hardware store. There are too many variables to list here.
Step 2 - Cut the Hole for the Fan
Now that you have your fan, the next thing to do is cut the hole for it. First, decide on the best location. Now, lay the fan on its face. This is the side with the louvers. Measure the inside diameter of the fan casing. Using this measurement, mark the wall or ceiling where you will install your fan. Take your tiger saw, or jig saw, and cut the hole.
Step 3 - Secure the Attic Fan
Before you put the fan in place, consider how you will attach it. Drywall alone provides insufficient support. If drywall is all there is, put small pieces of 2x4 between the joists in your attic for additional support. During this step, you will need someone or something to brace the fan, so it stays in place. Once your fan is held in place, drill the holes and screw the case of the fan in so that it is tight.
Step 4 - Connect the Wiring
Now that the attic fan is in place, all that is left is the wiring. Shut your power off. If there is suitable electrical in place near your fan, you can connect it to that. Otherwise, put a new breaker in an open slot of your breaker box and connect the wires to the breaker and run them up to your new attic fan. Finally, connect them with wire connectors. Electrical work is dangerous, so, depending on your skill level and situation, you may want to hire an electrician to wire the fan for you.
