Attic Remodeling Tips

Attic remodeling has become a very popular practice over the last few years. Here are a few tips to remodel your attic effectively.

First, though, remember to check and see if you need a permit or if your local zoning laws even allow for finished attics. Also, make sure your attic remodeling project will not negatively impact the rest of your home. From structural integrity to heating and cooling, remodeling any floor or room will affect the entire structure.

Step 1 - Build the Subfloor

The first thing that you need to do is build a subfloor. Get plywood and install it onto the rafters. Use a hammer and nails or a nail gun to attach the plywood. Before you can do any other work in the attic, make sure you have a sound subfloor. Otherwise, your work will be much more difficult.

Step 2 - Install the Basics

You will need to install different things depending on what you want to accomplish with your attic remodel. If you want to put a bathroom up there, you need to run the appropriate plumbing. Hire a plumber for this unless you feel comfortable with the job.

Install access to the house's HVAC system. Most of the time, the attic will be very hot in the summer and very cold in the winter. Therefore, you need to make sure you provide access to heating and air conditioning.

Step 3 - Put Up Walls

Next, put up the walls. Most of the time, drywall is your best bet. However, you can also use paneling if you want. You will most likely need some help for this step, as handling drywall can be very difficult on your own.

Step 4 - Install Insulation

Now that you have put up the walls, make sure to insulate the area. You can use spray insulation or the kind that comes in rolls. Just make sure you thoroughly insulate the area. Otherwise, it will still be very hot in the summer and very cold in the winter.

Step 5 - Paint the Walls

Once the drywall is in place, putty the edges of the drywall and paint over them. Paint the entire surface of the wall with your paintbrush. There are a number of different painting techniques that you could use to provide either texture or a smooth, finished look.

Step 6 - Install Flooring

Once the walls are done, install some type of flooring in the area. There are many different options you could go with in your attic. One of the simplest options would be to install a laminate floor. However, you might also prefer a softer surface like carpet. At this point, the basics of remodeling your attic should be complete.
