Ever since the days of Cleopatra, canopies have been gracing beds all around the globe. But, where at one time they were relied upon as a source of privacy, these days, they are implemented more often as part of a bedroom’s décor.
From gorgeous, billowing canopies designed exclusively for decoration to canopies with more function than flash, there are a number of beautiful bed canopy options available for homeowners to choose from. Bed canopies come in many different styles, but the three primary types are:
- Ceiling Bed Canopies – Simply hanging gauze fabric from four or more points on the ceiling can create a visually appealing accent to any bedroom.
- Hoop-Style Bed Canopies – Fabric or mesh drapes down over the bed from a hoop attached to the ceiling.
- Tent-Style Bed Canopies – Similar to the hoop-style but with an enclosed top.
Decorative Bed Canopy Options
One of the most common variations of the decorative bed canopy is the type that is used in conjunction with a four-post bed frame. It drapes over the top of the bed and has openings on both sides and at the foot of the bed. But, while this is one of the more common types, there are newer versions of this design that offer a world of decorative possibilities. These newer types make it possible to have a bed canopy in place without the need of a four-poster bed.
This type of bed canopy hangs from the ceiling either at the head of the bed or above the center of the bed. It features a metal circle over which the material drapes down. It has a hanger at the top that allows it to hang on a simple hook. These bed canopies can be extravagantly elegant or a simple mesh curtain.
Functional Bed Canopy Options
Bed canopies, while decorative, can still be implemented for more functional purposes. For instance, if you live in an area where there are a lot of flying insects, a mesh bed canopy can help keep them from landing on you while you’re sleeping. For this reason, you should choose a canopy that is made with a sturdier mesh or light fabric.
Bed Canopy Options for Kids
While it’s the dream of every little girl to be a princess, simply adding a bed canopy to their bedroom can make that dream a reality. And what boy wouldn’t love turning his bed into a fortress or secret hideout? There are a number of kid-themed variations available, from their favorite cartoon characters to no-see-um mosquito mesh for the perfect look and function.
If you like the look of a bed canopy but you don’t want the fabric covering your entire bed, a tent-style canopy can easily be installed so it only covers the headboard area of the bed. This allows for a beautiful and clean look without it overtaking the design of the room itself.
