The birch tree is a common variety found in northern climates in America and beyond. This type of tree has many different varieties, but most share a few common features.

Features of the birch tree

The common characteristics that are found in most birch tree species include:

  • Size – The birch tree is known for being small to medium in size. This type of tree does not typically grow beyond 50 feet in height.
  • Fall foliage – The birch tree will have leaves that turn colors and fall off n the winter. The white variety of birch tree can be quite striking visually during the fall period.
  • Thin bark – The birch tree is known for its thin bark that can be torn off in sheets, much like paper.
  • Resinous – The birch tree is known for having a thick resinous oil secretion.

The most commonly thought of birch tree in North America is the white birch, which is known for its striking trunk color. Other varieties of this tree can also be found in colder climates in North America and beyond. Some of the other types of birch tree species include:
