Boiled Dry: Stainless Steel Pots and Stain Removal
If you have stainless steel pots that boiled dry you may think cleaning it would be a hopeless project or perhaps one you don't want to undertake. Restoring it to new really isn't a difficult task, there are a couple of ways to do it.
If the blackening isn't very bad you may be able to scrape it gently with a metal spatula to loosen the burnt crust of food. Rinse it and if any blackening remains, scour it with the steel wool or soap pad until clean. Rinse again and the job is done.
If you have a heavy burned black crust you may think throwing the pan away is the only thing you want to do. Try this old fashioned remedy, you may be surprised at the results.
Put about a half inch of water in the bottom of the pan, then sprinkle in enough cream of tartar to cover the bottom. Put the pot on a burner and allow it to come to a simmer and simmer for 20 minutes or so and you will see it start to loosen. Use the scraper to loosen it a bit to see your progress. Let it sit a few hours or overnight, scrape again and you will see most of the crust is gone. Scour the remainder with the soap pad and your pot will be like new again.
