Gutter maintenance is something you probably don't think about until mid to late fall, when your roof and gutters become covered with leaves. Cleaning and maintaining your box gutters is not a fun task, but it's a necessary one if you want to extend the life of your gutters.
Tools and Materials Needed:
- Garden hose
- Tube of gutter sealant
Step 1: Safety First
Make sure your ladder has a firm base before you climb up onto the roof. It's a great idea to have a help present to stabilize the ladder. Wear shoes that have a good grip, put on your gloves and climb up onto the roof.
Step 2: Start Sweeping
Clear your roof of leaves, from top to bottom. Take extra care to avoid a fall. Once the roof is clear, get down on your knees at the edge of the roof, and clear the leaves out of your gutters by hand.
Step 3: Flush the Gutters
Using the garden hose, run water through the gutters. This will flush out smaller debris and indicate any leaks. Your assistant can watch from below for those leaks and make note of where they are.
Step 4: Seal the Gutters
A big part of gutter maintenance is making sure that leaks are sealed in a timely manner, so they won't grow bigger or lead to water damage. Once the gutters are dry, apply sealant to the inside where you noted the leaks. Leaks most commonly occur where two gutter pieces are joined together.
