Build a Shoji Screens Cupboard Build a Shoji Screens Cupboard
Shoji screens are a part of Japanese architecture. These screens consist of very simple lines, and they impart a clean look. Originally the screens were developed and used in traditional Japanese homes, are usually very small and are built with straight lines. The screens were used to compartmentalize some of the space, and they ultimately were developed to add functional storage space to the Japanese home. Traditionally, the screens were made of a wood frame which had to be sturdy enough to hold heavy items. On the inside of the wood frame you would generally find rice paper. The rice paper would be stretched neatly over the frame and tacked into place. The utilization of shoji screens has expanded from cupboards to doors, walls and window coverings. These screens are perfect for bathroom or kitchen cupboards. Below is a full instruction list on how to properly build the screen cupboards.
Step 1 - Build the Cupboard
Take the measurements for your cupboard. Measure for the length of your cupboard, the depth of the cupboard and the height. Note each of these measurements on a piece of paper.
Purchase wood at your local home improvement center. Since this type of cupboard is reflective of simple and clean lines, pick a hardwood, rather than a composite wood.
Build the frame of your cupboard. Start with the bottom. Layout the lengths and the widths of the bottom. Secure each piece of hardwood with wood glue and with wood screws or nails. Next, cut and attach the sides of your frame so that you achieve the height you are looking for. Similar to the bottom frame, attach the side pieces at the top portion. You should now have a framed box. At this point you can secure the frame to the floor boards.
Now you will need to cut the left and right side of the cupboard. Secure these sides to the frame with screws or nails and wood glue for extra good measure.
Step 2 - Cut the Shoji Panels
Purchase rice paper or screening that will act as your shoji screens. You can find this material in many local home improvement centers or fabric stores. Cut the Panel to the size of the front of your cupboard.
Step 3 - Cut the Doors
Cut the door frames for your cupboard. The door frame should consist of four pieces of wood that will fit with the size of your cupboard frame. Attach hinges to the sides of the doors.
Step 4 - Secure the Panel
Run a thin bead of wood glue around the edges of the panel and secure it to the inside of the doors. Tack a couple finishing nails in each corner of the panel.
Step 5 - Add the Molding
To the outer side of the cupboard, add molding. Pick a very simple molding design and cut it to size. Miter saw the edges so that the molding frames the shoji screens properly.
Step 6 - Attach the Doors
Attach the doors to the cupboard sides. Check to see that they open and close properly.
Step 7 - Add the Cupboard Top
Add the top of the cupboard. Use a simple wood, and cut to size. Paint, stain and seal the shoji screen cupboard as desired.
