Platform beds are very simple to build and can help make creating additional sleeping space affordable and easy. Here is a quick how to guide to building a simple platform bed.
Step 1 – Design
Design your bed and calculate the materials you will need. A good size for a single platform bed would be 6’ x 3’ x 2’. Thus there will be two sides measuring 6’ x 2’, head-end and feet-end sides of 3’ x 2’ and top and bottom surfaces of the bed measuring 6’ x 3’. This will give you a neat rectangular single bed.
Step 2 – Buy Materials
To save time buy the materials cut to size so all you have to do is assemble them. If not, you can use your tools to cut them to size. Buy a plywood board, for instance, and prepare it by cutting it down into smaller boards for your bed with the saw. Cut them according to the sizes mentioned in step 1.
Step 3 – Preparation
Prepare all the wood by sanding down and checking dimensions. Make sure you have three pairs of cut plywood boards, both in each pair of the same size.
Step 4 – Build the Frames First
These will form the skeleton upon which the bed will be built and provide the strength needed. Build the frame according to your initial diagram using the lumber. You may have a square or a rectangular frame. Fix the boards into place with the help of nails and brackets.
Step 5 – Assemble Frames
Assemble the frames to form the skeleton and make sure it is quite rigid.
Step 6 – Attach Sides
Cut the sides and top after measuring out the distance between the frame pieces. Be precise about measurements here. Attach the sides and top to the skeleton – you will now have the basic platform bed to the size you wanted it.
