You can save a lot of money buy building your own bunk bed ladder for your kid’s bed. Moreover, you can build it the way you want and make one that your children will love and be safe using. Follow the simple steps below to build a ladder for your children's bunk beds.

Step 1 – Measuring the Bed

The first thing you need to do is measure the distance between the floor and the top of the bunk bed so that you know how tall your ladder needs to be. Make sure that you measure it properly—2 or 3 times until you are certain you have the right measurements for the ladder. Once you have the lumber pieces, saw them according to the measurements you have.

Step 2 – Cutting the Rungs

Cut a third piece of lumber into 5 pieces each at 1.5 feet. These will become the ladder rungs. Take the 2 larger pieces you cut previously and bolt the 5 rungs to them, each 12 inches apart. The top piece should be even with the upper post of the ladder.

Step 3 – Check the Ladder

Once you have the pieces of the ladder in place, check if the bunk bed ladder has the right height when you attach it to the top part of the bunk bed. If you have measured the length properly, you will not have any problems now, but if the ladder has to be shorter, you can make the proper adjustments now. If the ladder is too short you should repeat the first step again.

Step 4 – Saw an Arc

Since you are using the ladder for the bunk bed of your children, you should make sure that you remove the rough edges from the upper parts. Use the saw to cut an arc at the upper part of the sides of the ladder.

Step 5 – Sand the Ladder

Sand the ladder properly so as to prepare it for staining and varnishing. Clean the ladder from sanding and stain it with a safe product. Allow the ladder to dry.

Step 6 – Nail the Ladder

Once dry, nail the ladder to the upper part of the bunk bed, making sure that the bunk bed ladder touches the ground so that it is stable.
