A wood platform bed frame is a very simple and modern look that offers back support. Instead of paying hundreds for a wood platform bed frame you can build it yourself and the following article will show you how.

Step 1 - Get the Wood

Instead of cutting would yourself have the store cut it for you as they rarely charge for this service. The size of the bed will determine the measurements and amounts of wood you need. Follow the guide below for different wood platform bed frame sizes.

Twin:

  • 40x76-inch piece of particle board
  • 4 1x12s trimmed to 28 inches long
  • 4 1x12s trimmed to 62 1/2 inches long
  • 2 1x4s trimmed to 40 inches long
  • 2 1x4s trimmed to 77 1/2 inches long

Full:

  • 2 full sheets of particle board trimmed to 38x55 inches
  • 4 1x12s trimmed to 43 inches long
  • 4 1x12s trimmed to 62 1/2 inches long
  • 2 1x4s trimmed to 61 inches long
  • 2 1x4s trimmed to 82 1/2 inches long

Queen:

  • 2 full sheets of particle board each trimmed to 40 1/2 x 61 inches
  • 4 1x12s trimmed to 49 inches long
  • 4 1x12s trimmed to 67 1/2 inches long
  • 2 1x4s trimmed to 61 inches long
  • 2 1x4s trimmed to 82 1/2 inches long

King:

  • 2 full sheets of particle board each trimmed to 40 1/2 x 77 inches
  • 4 1x12s trimmed to 65 inches long
  • 4 1x12s trimmed to 67 1/2 inches long
  • 2 1x4s trimmed to 77 inches long
  • 2 1x4s trimmed to 82 1/2 inches long

Step 2 - Preparation

If you are using a frame size that uses a single sheet of particle board, sand down the edges. If you are creating a larger wood platform bed frame that uses two sheets then attach them together with metal strapping.

Step 3 - Base Frame

This is the strongest portion of the wood platform bed frame. Start by building a rectangular frame. Use the 1x12s to do this. Create the initial box by creating pilot holes slightly smaller than the wood screws you are using. The 1x12s that remain are placed inside the box. Two long boards will run the length of the box. When you place these boards they will split the box up into even thirds. Drill your pilot holes and affix with the wood screws. Measure the width between each third and cut the remaining 1x12s to fit between the long boards along the width. Place them between the sections, two per section and staggered. Drill pilot holes and attach with wood screws. Apply wood putty to the holes and flatten with the putty knife. Once the putty is dry sand it so it is smooth.

Step 4 - Build the Top

Place the particle board on top of the wood platform bed frame base and attach using the brackets with two on each of the sides. Make sure it is centered on the frame before attaching. The 1x4s are used to create a short lip for the mattress to rest inside of. Affix them around the particle board so that there is a 1-inch lip. Paint or stain the finished frame.
