Building your own vanity mirror can be a simple task, if you put your mind to it. Vanity mirrors come in many different sizes, colors, shapes and styles, by building your own you can insure that the mirror match your home's decor. The mirror itself may be mounted on the wall or it may sit on the vanity, the choice is yours.

Step 1: Vanity Type and Materials

Before you begin to build, you need to know what you are looking for. Do you want to use a piece of antique furniture as your vanity table, or do you want the vanity built into the wall? These two styles are built in two very different ways. An old piece of furniture: an old desk or table can easily be converted into a vanity table. The mirror can be set on the table, or it can be mounted on the wall behind the table. If you choose to mount the mirror, do not choose a deep piece of furniture for your base or you may find yourself leaning toward the mirror in order to see anything. Shelves also come in many styles and may be directly installed into the wall, at a height that is ideal for you and your family.

Step 2: Paint or Stain

Before you begin installation, you should paint or stain the furniture you wish to use. If the furniture has been painted, you will want to keep it looking nice. Even if you decide not to change anything, apply a layer of sealant to the existing paint. This will prevent any future damage and help the paint or stain last for several years.

Step 3: Measurements and Installation

This step is necessary if you choose to install a shelf. Use the measuring tape to measure the area from the floor to the height you wish to place your shelf. Use a pencil to mark the correct height. This height will depend on whether or not you wish to stand. If you use a chair, you will want the height to be 4 inches above the seat of the chair you will use. Install the shelf according to the manufacturer's instructions. A pre-packaged shelf should have all the hardware you will need to complete the job. Once the shelf is installed, use a level to insure that the shelf is straight. You will also need to ensure that the screws are tight.

Step 4: Install Mirror

Once the shelf is installed or the desk is in place, it is time to install the mirror. If you have a simple countertop mirror, place it on the vanity and arrange it suitably. If, however, you have chosen to mount your mirror, you will need to follow the manufacturer's instructions.

Step 5: Add Lights and Accessories

Lights and accessories are completely optional. The lighting can be as simple as a lamp. Other accessories can include scarves, beads or draped jewelry. Again, all this depends on what you want the final product to be. Have fun and enjoy your vanity.
