A garden planter is a great way to add color and life to a patio or deck. Garden planters can be large or small. A great way to incorporate a planter is to build it directly into a bench on the patio or in the garden or backyard. This way you are creating seating and a decorative display at the same time. The planter and the bench will enhance the look of the garden space. Building a bench and garden planter is a fairly simple process that should take about a day to complete.

Step 1 – Create a Plan

You must first choose the location in the garden. The size of the area will determine the size of the bench and planter. The location will also give you an idea of what kind of wood that you would like to use to build the planter because you want it to match your surroundings.

Step 2 – Create the Bench

No matter what type of wood you choose, you should use 2 x 4 lumber. Purchase the lumber at a home improvement to ensure that you are getting the proper wood for building a planter. You should be able to purchase pre-cut lumber so that you do not have to worry about cutting the wood yourself once you get home. The pre-cut planter lumber will also have the jointed areas already cut for you as well.

Start by placing the smaller slats across the top of the frame to form the top of the bench. You will then attach the side, or end pieces, and attach that to the finished bench top.

Step 3 – Build the Planters

Using the pre-cut lumber and build two planter boxes for each end of the bench. The wood will be held together with screws. When you have the boxes, attach them to the bench using galvanized screws. Galvanized screws will not rust and are used for outdoor building projects.

Step 4 – Completing the Look

To complete the look of your bench and planters you will need to apply either a stain or paint. If you are looking for a natural look to the wood you can use a stain. Some of the pre-cut lumber for building benches. The planters may be stained so it just a matter of picking the color that you want.

If you are staining, you will need to sand down the wood before treating it. This will ensure that the stain and paint soaks into the wood, which make the color last longer. You can then add a cushion to the bench. This can also be purchased at the home improvement stores in the garden section.
