Step 1 – Safety

Put on your protective eye wear, work gloves and work boots when building your furniture. Wear your dust mask when applying the stain and sealer. Be careful working with power tools. Be sure the power switch is turned to the off position before connecting the tool to a power source. Always store your power tools in a safe place when you are finished working with them. Keep all power tools safely away from children and pets.

Step 2 – Designing the Plans

Design your plans for your garden set. Consider purchasing a design plan from a local home improvement or hardware store. The plans should include a list of the tools and materials necessary.

Step 3 – Determining the Amount of Lumber Required

Determine the amount of lumber you will need and the sizes required to make your garden set. Lumber boards are available in eight foot lengths. They come in the following sizes: 1x1, 2x4 and 4x4. Lumber panels are also available in eight foot lengths. They come in four foot widths.

Step 4 – Gathering Your Tools and Materials

Check to be sure you have all of the necessary tools. Anything that you do not own can either be borrowed from a friend or family member, or rented from your local rental shop. Be sure to read all of the fine print in the rental contract if you decide to rent your tools. Purchase all of the materials you need from your local lumber shop or home improvement store.

Step 5 – Preparing a Work Space

Prepare a space where you will work on your garden set project. You will need a hard, flat surface where you can organize all of the power tools. The space should be well lit and provide the power source required for the tools.

Step 6 – Cutting and Sanding the Lumber

Using your design plans, cut your lumber into the sizes required. Sand all of the pieces so that the edges are smooth. Sort your lumber into the necessary parts for the patio set. Cut any designs you planned on the wood with the help of your router and table saw. Sand the edges of these cuts as well.

Step 7 – Drilling Holes

Use your drill to make the necessary holes in the lumber pieces for all of the connecting nuts and bolts. Be sure to measure and mark and the locations before you drill the holes.

Step 8 – Assembling the Parts

Assemble and connect the parts to the furniture frames. Use a level and square to ensure that the parts are properly connected. Secure the parts with the necessary nuts, bolts and screws. For joints that require glue, apply the required amount and allow the glued joint enough time to dry completely.

Step 9 – Staining the Furniture

Use a paintbrush to apply the wood stain to your garden patio set. Allow the stain to dry thoroughly. If necessary, apply a second layer of stain.

Step 10 – Protecting the Furniture

Use a paintbrush to apply a clear, weather resistant sealer to the furniture pieces. Allow the sealer enough time to dry. Apply a second coat and allow that layer to dry thoroughly before using the furniture.
