You can build your own custom wood doors for your kitchen cabinets. You can finish your custom cabinet doors with a stain or a paint covering. This simple home project will add value to your home. You should be able to complete the project over a weekend.

Step 1 – Measuring the Cabinets

Use your measuring tape to determine the size of the cabinet that requires a new door. Measure from one inside edge to the other. Add a ½ inch to your measurements. This will provide enough room for the door to overlap the cabinetry. Divide the width measurement in two. You will making two doors for each opening into the cabinetry. Note these measurements on paper.

Step 2 – Choosing the Wood

Visit your local lumber or home improvement store. Take your measurements with you. Speak with a professional about your plans to build custom doors for you kitchen cabinets. Be sure to consider any budget limitations when you choose the wood for your doors. You will need ¾-inch thick lumber.

Step 3 – Smoothing the Lumber

Use your measurements to mark out the outline of your doors on your wood. Cut out the doors from the lumber, using your pencil lines as your guide. Sand the wood with your power sander to smooth the surface. Be sure to work the sander in the direction of the wood grain.

Step 4 – Staining the Doors

Apply your stain or paint to the cabinet doors. Read the instructions provided by the manufacturer of the stain or paint before you begin. Paint the finish onto the wood in long, even strokes. Allow the finish to dry completely. Apply a second coat to the door and allow it to dry thoroughly. Consider applying a sealer over the finish to protect it from scratches.

Step 5 – Attaching the Door Hinges

Lay your finished doors on a hard flat surface. Place the doors so that they are facing downward. Use your tape measure to mark the hinge location 4 inches from the top and bottom of the door. Position the hinges onto the door. Be sure they are placed in a level position. Secure the hinges to the doors with your screws and screwdriver.

Step 6 – Attaching the Door Knobs

Turn your doors over so that they are facing upward. Use your tape measure to determine the location of your door knob. Be sure location is the same on both of the doors. Secure the knobs to the doors with your screws and screwdriver.

Step 7 – Securing the Doors to the Cabinets

You will need a friend or family member to help you install the doors. Mark the location of the hinges on the cabinets. Be sure the doors are set in a level position. Secure the doors to the cabinets with your screws and screwdriver.
