Building Your Own Skateboard Deck
It can be easy to build your own unique skateboard deck. Follow the simple steps below for a fun and creative project.
Tools and Materials
- Jigsaw
- 9 Maple Sheets
- Sand Paper
- Wood Glue
- Paint
- Marker
- Primer
- Paint Brushes
- Varnish
Step 1: Purchase the Sheets
To begin, purchase the maple sheets according to your requirement. Select 9 maple sheets that to measure about 15 cm in length when held together.
Step 2: Glue the Sheets
Apply wood glue to the sheets and attach the sheets together to form a board. Allow the sheets to dry for few hours.
Step 3: Cut the Board
Depending on your requirement, cut the board to the desired length and width using the jigsaw. Usually, the boards measure 30 to 34 inches in length and 7 to 9 inches in width. Choose the measurement that suits you the best.
Step 4: Shape to the Deck
You can either freehand the curves of your deck on the wood or borrow a friend's skateboard to get a better idea. Use a marker to mark the curves on the deck.
Step 5: Sand
Next, cut the deck should along the marked lines. Sand the rough edges to smooth them.
Step 6: Paint
Now the deck looks curvy, but the only element missing is the paint. Use the paint brush to coat the deck with a primer. then add color to the board by coating it with the base color of your choice.
Step 7: Add Graphics
Accessorize your deck with cool graphics either by printing them out on a computer and sticking them to your skateboard deck or drawing the designs by hand.
Step 8: Finish Up
Finish the deck by applying 1 or 2 coats of varnish. Now allow the deck to dry for a few hours before you attempt to use it.
Tips and Warnings
- Do not allow children below the age of 15 to perform this task on their own. Adult supervision is necessary.
- Add graphics before installing the wheels and the trucks to the skateboard.
