Can removing wallpaper with a steamer damage drywall?
A wallpaper steamer can make removing wallpaper easier. Scoring the wallpaper first with a scorer, available at home improvement stores, will make the process even faster and easier. Use a gentle but firm pressure to avoid damaging the wall. Wallpaper steamers will gently lift the old wallpaper away from the wall board and should not cause damage to the plaster or drywall when used properly. Caution should be exercised, though, when using a steamer on drywall. Drywall tends to absorb moisture and can crack or chip if it becomes overly damp. Using a scraper to assist in removing the wallpaper will increase the danger of tearing or damaging the drywall.
