A cantilever is a structure with an overhang that is only supported at one end. In furniture, the cantilever style is becoming more and more poplar. Most people are familiar with a type of cantilever that is used in restaurants to separate the customers from the work area. This is a very easy cantilever to make and can be added as an extension to your counter or island.
- Step 1: Measure the width of your counter top and determine how long you want the cantilever to be.
- Step 2: Use these measurements to cut out a piece of wood between 1-2 inches thick. You can choose to leave the block square or round off one side of it.
- Step 3: Sand the entire surface down and polish it.
- Step 4: Use two heavy hinges to connect the cantilever to the rest of the counter. The hinges should allow the piece to be folded onto the countertop, and down until it is level with the counter.
Tips for a Cantilever Counter Top
This is a great way to add a couple feet of counter top that can be taken away when you don't need it. Many people like to use butcher block for the cantilever to make it match the rest of the kitchen.
