Carpet Fitting Tips: How to Cut Carpet to Fit

What You'll Need
Carpet Knife
Carpet Shears
Tape Measure

Carpet fitting typically requires that you know carpet cutting techniques. If you have a piece of carpet to cut and don't have experience in these techniques, use the 5 steps below to successfully cut your carpet for proper installation.

Step 1 – Measure

With you tape measure, measure the space where you'll be laying your carpet. For wall-to-wall installations, add 1 ½" to each between-wall measurement. Be sure to measure the space more than once to ensure accuracy.

Step 2 – Position the Carpet for Cutting

Choose a flat surface and unroll the carpet with the nap face down.

Measure from the end of the carpet the same distance as the line you measured in Step 1. At this point, make a straight line from one side of the carpet to the other side.
Step 3 – Cut the Carpet

Along the cut line you drew, run the carpet knife. Use the carpet shears to cut through the carpet not cut by the knife.
Roll up the piece carpet you will install, take it to the room where it will be installed, and fit it into place.
