Change Locks Yourself or Hire a Pro?

If you find yourself in a situation where you must change locks, the following process can make the experience quick and simple either by completing the work yourself or having someone do it for you.

Changing the Lock Yourself

Examine the latch of the door to determine what brand of lock it is. Purchase the same lock from a local hardware store. Measure the back set of the door by measuring from the door latch to the middle of the door knob. With a screwdriver, unscrew the door lock screws. Remove the two front and back door lock pieces from the door. Unscrew the screws from the door edge. Remove the last part of the door lock. Place the new lock into the door. Secure the lock to the edge of the door with the screws. Put the two front and back pieces together in the door. Secure the parts with the screws.

When to Call a Professional

Problems with the door or the lock should be cause for calling a professional to do the replacement. An older property with original locking mechanisms may cause difficulties in finding a matching lock. Whatever the reason may be, if you decide to contact a professional locksmith be sure the person is from a reputable, reliable and secure business.
