The Rules of The Game

When you're changing up your home address plaque, there are two rules. Rule one, you need to be able to see your address plaque from the road. Unless you want to spend your days chasing down lost packages and having to tell your friends exactly which house is yours a hundred times, you need an address that is easily visible from the road.

The font needs to be easy to read. The colors need to have enough contrast to stick out. Most drivers don't have Clark Kent vision, so white numbers on a cream house aren't going to cut it.

The second rule, which is more of a suggestion, is to match your plaque to the style of your home. If you live in a modern farmhouse, a lime green address plaque may not pop in the right way. Use your address plaque to complement and enhance the design of your home.

If you live in an apartment, condo, or townhome—you'll need to check with the complex manager or the HOA before you do anything. Because there could be rules about the outside of your home, it's important to check before you get hit with a fine.

The bold metal will stand out on a lighter-colored home and make your new address easy to see from the street. If you have a darker-colored home, you can make the mental pop by backing it with a contrasting wood piece.

Plant It

Make a simple statement with an address plaque that doubles as a planter. Start by determining if your space needs a horizontal or vertical plaque. Once you've decided which way your address should run, it's time to DIY. Start with a wood piece that is large enough for a planter and address numbers. Take smaller pieces of wood and build out a little planter at the end of your sign.

If you've got a verticle sign, your planter will be smaller. You can use wood glue and nails to secure the pieces together. Then attach your numbers, add a plant, and don't forget to water.

Keep an eye on your growing greens to make sure that they don't cover up any of the numbers in your address. That's a really easy way to lose the Amazon package you've been waiting on.

The Grass is Greener

Speaking of going green with your house numbers, we love the faux grass look. Take a shadow box and add turf until the box is filled. Then, add your house numbers to the box for a bright green look that practically pops off the house.

If grass isn't your plant of choice, give flowers a try. You can grab inexpensive flowers at any craft store and use those as a backdrop instead of turf. Attach floral foam to the back of the shadow box with glue, and then insert the fake florals until you've got a look you love. Then, of course, add numbers on top with hot glue.
