Chemical Toilets Chemical Toilets
Chemical toilets are usually portable toilets. They are used in recreational vehicles, campers, cabins, outdoor festivals, and worksites. They use chemicals to at least partially disinfect waste and reduce the odors.
Because they are equipped with only limited storage capacity, chemical toilets must be pumped regularly and periodically cleaned by a septic company. Although some of the chemicals used in these toilets attest to their environmental safety, waste management officials remain wary.
In more than a few states, waste from chemical toilets may not be discharged into surface waters or onto the ground. Waste may also occasionally be dumped in a private septic system, but care should be taken to test it out, as the chemicals used in portable toilets are sometimes more caustic than those which are normally found in septic systems.
