Choosing the Best Material for Pegboard Pegs
Besides the pegboard itself, the pegboard pegs are the most important element of the material; they are what enable it to function as storage board from which to hang tools or merchandise. Pegboard, in truth, is a brand name, although it has become eponymous for any variety of perforated hardboard designed for the placement of pegs or hooks.
Pegboard is typically constructed from one of three materials: wood-based composite such as particleboard or MDF, solid wood or plywood or steel. The pegs are made from the same materials, while hooks used to mount tools or merchandise are made of metal. Composite fiberboard has the benefit of being very strong and long lasting, but given too much weight that is poorly distributed, it can warp. Wood or plywood is more expensive to produce, but it is a nicer looking product. Lastly, steel pegboard can be very weighty and needs to be properly mounted if used in large sections. Steel pegboard, despite its limitations, the most resilient material.
Function of Pegboard
Pegboard is basically large sheets or strips of composite, wood or steel into which evenly spaced rows of holes are drilled. Into these holes go pegs or hooks in order to hold tools, materials and merchandise. In the right arrangement, 2-4 pegs can support just about any tool in a workshop. In stores, pegboard is often used to display wares, mainly using hooks.
Choosing the Best Pegboard Peg Material
The material used for the pegboard pegs is not always the same as what is used for the pegboard itself. Oftentimes, metal hooks are used in conjunction with wood composite pegboard. The material you use with your pegboard setup will depend mostly upon what needs support. In a workshop, heavy tools may require steel or brass pegs while for lighter tools wood pegs may suffice. Another factor to consider is the size of the holes in the pegboard. It may prohibit which materials will work as pegs. Brass pegs, for instance, may not be available in the needed size. The holes found in pegboard are either ¼ inch or 3/16 inch, so the material you use will have to conform to the size of the pre-drilled holes.
Metal pegs, including brass, is the strongest choice, but it is also the most expensive. Machined pegs are fairly labor intensive which helps to drive the cost up. Their strength, however, will not be matched by wood. For heavy tools hung from pegboard, metal pegs are your best bet. Metal hooks work as well. They come in a variety of lengths and sizes and are useful for just about every tool. The quick and easy way they attach to pegboard ensures secure support of whatever you hang.
As an alternative to metal, wooden pegs work in pegboard as well. Since the holes pre-drilled into pegboard are at most ¼ inch in diameter, several wooden pegs are required to support heavier tools. Wood doweling is strong, although given a lot of weight, it may not be adequate to support the heaviest of the tools you would hang from the board unless fortified with additional pegs.
Your basic choices for pegboard pegs consists of metal or wood. While metal pegs are stronger, they are more expensive and may put stress on pegboard when used to support too much weight. Wood pegs are less expensive, but their ability to support tools on pegboard comes into question the heavier the weight.
