What You'll Need
Gloves
Vacuumor Broom
Sheers
New Filters

A furnace exhaust vent is something that has to be cleaned and maintained to keep it working properly. You will find that the more clogged you allow it to become the less it will do its job properly. The vent is designed to get rid of the gaseous combustion products that are created by the furnace, moving them outside your home. When it becomes clogged, these products will be stuck in your home. The end result can be very harmful to your health.

Step 1 – Location

The first thing that you will need to do is to of course find the actual exhaust vent outside of your home. If you are unsure where it is then it is a good idea to check with the furnace owner’s manual as it will be able to give you an idea of where you should look for it. Take note of where it is whenever you do find it so that you will not have this problem again.

Step 2 – Protect from Winter

If you are doing this during the winter and there has recently been an ice or snow storm then you will need to check for this first. Snow and ice can wreak havoc on your vents. Make sure that they have not been taken over by anything of the sort.

Step 3 – Debris

You will need to watch out for any type of debris year round. During the springtime as birds will be looking for places to make their nests. In the fall you will have to worry about all of the leaves that could clog up your vents. It is a good idea to get a vacuum or a broom so that you will be able to get out any dirt that could blow into the system during the summer months when it is dry.

Step 4 – Shrubbery

Get a good pair of sheers to get the vents clear of any type of branches, vines trees or just shrubbery in general. Plants can get in the way of your vent and sometimes grow up inside, clogging it.

Step 5 – Filters

In addition to all of this you will need to make sure that you have all of the filters cleaned out or replaced on a regular basis. Whenever the filters are kept clean you will be able to expect to get the maximum amount of airflow possible out of your vents. You will need to check the filters or replace them at least every three months. You will need to do this more often if you have pets or if you live in a new home.

Step 6 – Additional Hints

Make sure that you keep track of whenever you are cleaning or replacing your filters. Time can easily get away from you if you do not pay attention to when you have done this. Also be sure that you look at the owner’s manual to make sure that you are cleaning the filters and vent properly.
