If water in your tub or shower is starting to drain very slowly, you may need to clean out your shower trap. The shower trap is designed to trap items that may clog up the wastewater line in your home. Occasionally you will need to clean it out. This is an easy DIY job, and this simple guide will show you how.
Step 1 - Remove Trap Drain Cover
Use the screwdriver to gently pry off the trap drain cover. You may need to twist the cover slightly as you pry it off in order to remove it.
Step 2 - Remove the Trap
Grab the flat riser on the top of the trap and turn it counterclockwise. The trap will then unlock and you can simply pull it out.
Step 3 - Clean the Trap
Take an old toothbrush and clean the hair and gunk inside the trap. Then soak the trap in some water mixed with mild laundry detergent and bleach for about 10 to 15 minutes. Rinse the trap with hot water.
Step 4 - Replace Trap and Cover
Reinstall the trap and then turn it clockwise to lock it into place. Finally, press the drain cover in place until it snaps and is secure.
