Cleaning Porcelain Tile of Lingering Residue
Cleaning porcelain tile is an easy job. The high density and glazed surface of porcelain tiles makes it hard for stains to develop. Most types of dirt comes off easily when cleaned. Simply wipe the tiles with a soft, damp cloth to remove surface dust and debris. The one thing you may struggle to clean is a lingering residue. This is common with newly installed porcelain tiles. A haze develops after grout application which dulls the surface of your tiles. However, when this residue is removed, it leaves the tiles with a clear, shiny surface that enhances the beauty of your home.
Step 1 – Dust and Buff the Tiles
Use a soft cloth to clear dust and fine debris from your tiles. This makes it easier to determine exactly where the residue occurs. Next, use a microfiber cloth to buff the affected tiles. Work in a circular motion. For tiles installed on the wall, it is best to work from the top and move downwards. The buffing helps to reduce the lingering residue on the tile surface.
Step 2 – Apply Vinegar
In a spray bottle, place 2 cups of white vinegar and 2 cups of water. Attach the cap onto the bottle and secure it firmly. Shake the contents of the bottle well. Spray the solution lightly onto the affected tiles. Use a sponge to rub the solution over the lingering residue.
Step 3 - Rinse
Get a clean sponge and dip into plain water. Wipe over the tiles with the sponge. You may have to wipe several times with the sponge to clear all traces of vinegar. Wipe the tiles again with a soft cloth to absorb moisture. Allow the tiles to air-dry. Once the residue is cleaned, your tiles should have a clear, shiny surface. However, for residue that lingers, proceed to the next step.
Step 4 – Apply Commercial Grout Haze Cleaner
Obtain a grout haze cleaner from a home improvement store. Follow the instructions to prepare the cleaner for application to your tiles. Allow the remover to work on the tiles for the required time. Wipe away the cleaner with a wet sponge. Rinse the sponge several times as you continue to wipe the tiles. For large tiled surfaces, it is best to change the water in the bucket a couple of times. Wipe the tiles with a soft cloth and allow them to air-dry.
Step 5 – Clean with Mild Detergent
Mix a small amount of mild detergent and warm water in a small bucket. Dip a sponge into the solution so that minimal water is left. Use the sponge to clean the tiles. Use another sponge dipped in plain water to clear the soap from the tiles. Rinse the sponge several times to ensure that no soap remains on the tiles. Once the tiles are properly rinsed, dry them with a soft cloth.
